Phillip Hoopes, M.D., M.B.A. is a LASIK Surgeon in Salt Lake City and the Founder of Hoopes Vision where he provides LASIK for Salt Lake City and Utah patients. A Utah native, he is one of the most recognized names in Laser Eye Surgery, Vision Correction Surgery and Cataract Surgery in Salt Lake City and throughout the United States. Dr. Hoopes provides all types of Laser Eye Surgery including LASIK, Custom LASIK, All Laser Blade Free LASIK and other types of specialized Lasik Eye Surgery in Salt Lake City. Dr. Hoopes received his Medical Degree at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine and completed his Residency in Ophthalmology at University of Iowa Eye Center. In addition, Dr. Hoopes completed a Fellowship in Cataract and Lens Implant and Laser Eye Surgery. Most recently, Dr. Hoopes was awarded a Masters in Business Administration (M.B.A.) from the Kellogg School of Management of Northwestern University. Dr. Hoopes has briefly held the academic position of Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Utah Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. He has been performing eye surgery to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism since 1983.

Dr. Hoopes has participated in the FDA Clinical Trials for LASIK Eye Surgery and has contributed to the development of many Laser Eye Surgery procedures including LASIK and Custom LASIK. Dr. Hoopes has been providing Excimer Laser Eye Surgery since its FDA approval in 1995 and actually performed the first excimer laser eye surgery for the correction of nearsightedness and astigmatism on the Summit Apex Excimer Laser System upon its FDA approval in 1998. He is regarded as one of the most experienced LASIK Surgeons in the United States having performed over 38,000 eye surgery procedures and more than 18,000 Laser Eye Surgery procedures including LASIK, Custom LASIK, Blade Free LASIK and other Lasik Eye Surgery procedures. Recently, Dr. Hoopes was recognized as one of the top 100 LASIK surgeons in the United States, and Hoopes Vision as one of the top 50 eye surgery centers, in the country.

In addition to providing LASIK Surgery in Salt Lake City, Dr. Hoopes is recognized as a pioneer in the treatment of cataracts in Salt Lake City having been one of the first eye surgeons in the United States to perform “no stitch” cataract surgery in Utah. He is a leader in the use of advanced technology lens implants for cataract surgery including near vision presbyopia correcting lens implants such as the ReSTOR Lens Implant, the ReZoom Lens Implant and the Crystalens Lens Implant for helping cataract patients eliminate their dependence on eyeglasses, reading glasses and bifocals after cataract surgery.

Dr. Hoopes’ professional achievements and surgery milestones include:

  • March 16,1998: Performed the first excimer laser surgery for myopia and astigmatism on Summit laser after FDA approval.
  • October 1999: Recognized as one of the most experienced Array Multifocal Lens implant users in the United States.
  • Performed the First Wavefront-Optimized LASIK Surgery procedure in Utah.
  • Performed First Phacoemulsification with Implant Surgeon in Kansas City, 1984.
  • Second refractive surgeon in Midwest.
  • Performed First Crystalens Lens Implant in Utah.
  • Pioneered Astigmatism Surgery and Instrumentation, 1984.
  • August 3, 1987: Performed First “one-stitch” cataract surgery with small incision implant in the United States.

Phillip Hoopes, Jr., M.D. is Corneal Specialist and LASIK Surgeon at Hoopes Vision in Utah where he provides LASIK in Utah.

Phillip returned to Utah in 2005 to join Hoopes Vision after earning his professional education and starting his career elsewhere. After graduation from Brigham Young University, he headed to the southeast, where he stayed for nearly a decade. Dr. Hoopes, Jr. received his Medical Degree at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine and completed a Residency in Ophthalmology at Wake Forest as well, where he was Co-Chief resident in his final year. During his training, the Wake Forest Eye Center ranked in the top 10 for Clinical Ophthalmology Programs in the United States. Dr. Hoopes Jr. began a fellowship in Cornea and External Disease at Eye Consultants of Atlanta, where he was able to obtain extensive experience in corneal transplants, LASIK and cataract surgery. Prior to returning to Hoopes Vision to perform LASIK Surgery in Utah, Dr, Hoopes Jr. began his clinical career elsewhere and furthered his experience and expertise in his areas of interest including cornea transplantation, refractive surgery, cornea diseases and surgery, and cataract surgery.
